My coworker and I decided that we wanted to get both of our 5th grade classes together and read Wonder by R.J. Palacio. We want them to hear the same message and make some of the same connections with the changing the world digital set. Today we finished part one, Auggie's narration and all our students have:
The connections that the students are making while they are listening to the story are more powerful and rich then I imagined. To see true excitement gong on about Wonder and with how they want to change the world is infectious. Every day they ask if we are reading from Wonder and get to work on changing the world! Awesome!
We are not just 'Beckoning the Lovely' for a couple of days but we want to make our mark onto the world in a positive way. As 3 of my students said to me today, "Mrs. Denton, you sound just like Mr. Browne and his precepts. 'Your deeds are you monuments.' You want us to to live our lives to the fullest and the kindest way we can!" I don't think I could have received a better compliment or gift than that!
Our next step, as Angela Maiers would say, is to make our 'TO BE' list. We need to have an action plan and we must support each other in the plans. The students are about to geth their seeds and start our journey to change the world! They need to be ready for the bumps that lie ahead and find a way to persevere.
My job is to let them know every day that:
Today our journey began, I can't wait to see where it will go! If I can do on thing, no if can be one thing in the world right now, I can create a space of inspiration. I can provide my students with a clean slate every day, expect awesomeness and help to make it shine!
What are you going to do today, tomorrow and every other moment that you have here? Make each moment count and be AMAZING!
- Met and fallen in love with Auggie.
- Are experiencing life in the shoes of someone that looks different
- Are shedding many tears as they experience the story.
- Are starting to believe in Mr. Browne's monthly Precepts.
