I know that it has been way too long since the last time I was on here, but life has been busy and I have not given myself the time to sit and write! I know that I need to do more, that is my resolution and goal for myself this year.
Well after our long break and multiple 3 day weekends the community in my classroom started to shift back to unrest and untrust. I had to put a stop to that, so I decided to go back a revisit with Auggie! August is just to powerful of a character to not go back and listen to and admire. My students literally cheered when I pulled Wonder off the shelf again.
The Super Bowl was about to be played and the media was diving right back into what they think are the "good stories" but what about the SUPER stories? This was my chance to get my students thinking and connecting that there are amazing people not just fictional characters, but to real people. It helps that my husband is from Seattle and he introduced my to Derrick Coleman's story, he is the deaf offensive player for the Seahawks. The moment I saw his Duracell commercial, I knew I had to use it for a lesson and it would be perfect to get my students thinking about themselves, their "today" reality and their future. I also knew that Kid President would resonate with my students, so why not create a digital mini-lesson for the students to connect to, reflect on and write on using Derrick Coleman, Kid President and Auggie's stories to accomplish this.
I started using Google Presentation to put not only a life lesson together but a reading lesson. I can not tell you the power this lesson has had on my class. They have blogged and written on this topic more than anything else. But what is more, they are creating plans for themselves, for our school and for our world to be better. We start every day with the mantra, "Make today matter. I matter. I might mess up, but I will get up and be better! My words matter! My actions matter! Make today Awesome!"
Here is the Google Presentation with reading and writing strategies embedded.

My class is not perfect but my class is a room filled with curiosity and the desire to be better. It is my job to bring out their best and help them realize that we are here to help each other get better. My life would not be the same if I never met each and every student I have ever had. They are a part of me as much as I am a part of them. This is an amazing gift we give each other and we must honor it!
